Linear bearings are a fundamental component of linear motion systems, renowned for their low friction and high stability. They achieve this by utilizing load-bearing balls that make point contact with the outer bearing sleeve, allowing for smooth, rolling motion with minimal resistance. This design makes them ideal for a wide array of industrial machinery, including multi-axis machine tools, punch presses, automatic oxy-fuel cutting machines, and printers.
Rust Prevention
The housings of linear bearings are typically made from materials like stainless steel, bearing steel, or aluminum alloy, with bearing steel surfaces being particularly susceptible to rust. To prevent corrosion and ensure longevity, observe the following precautions:
1.Avoid Direct Contact: Prevent bare hand contact with the bearing surfaces, as sweat residue can cause corrosion.
2.Immediate Rust-Preventive Oil Application: After installation, promptly apply rust-preventive oil to create a protective film on the surface.
3.Regular Maintenance: Implement routine maintenance based on the bearing's usage frequency and environmental conditions.
4.Pre-treated Options: Where possible and rust prevention is a critical concern, opt for linear ball bearing products with pre-treated, rust-resistant surfaces.
Dust Protection
Operating linear motion ball bearings in dusty or dirty environments requires specific protective measures:
1.Sealed Bearings: Always opt for bearings equipped with seals to prevent contaminant ingress.
2.End Sealing: For highly abrasive environments, such as those found in woodworking machinery or foundry equipment, it is crucial to seal the ends of the linear motion bearings.
3.Consequences of Dust: Dust and oil residue can severely clog the ball raceway, hindering ball rotation and potentially leading to damage to the retainer or even ball ejection. Furthermore, the presence of metal shavings significantly reduces the bearing's operational lifespan.
Lubrication
It's critical to understand that the rust-preventive oil applied to linear ball bearings at the factory is not a lubricant.
1.Pre-use Preparation: Before putting the bearings into service, they must be thoroughly cleaned and dried.
2.Grease Application: After cleaning, apply appropriate grease to the inner row of balls within the linear motion bearing.
3.Regular Replenishment: Replenish grease as needed, based on operational demands and environmental factors.
Insufficient lubrication is a major cause of failure. It can lead to localized friction heat, causing deformation of friction surfaces, micro-welding, or even localized melting, ultimately resulting in the premature wear and failure of the linear bearings.
