How a Belt-Driven Actuator Works

Motor-Driven Pulley: A motor (such as a servo or stepper motor) provides rotational power to a toothed driving pulley.

Timing Belt: A timing belt, typically made of a fiber-reinforced elastomer and featuring teeth that match the pulley's grooves, is looped around this driving pulley.

Motion Transfer: As the driving pulley rotates, its teeth engage with the teeth on the belt. This creates a positive, non-slip pulling action that causes the belt to travel in a continuous loop.

Carriage Movement: A carriage, designed to carry the payload, is securely attached to a section of the belt. As the belt moves, it pulls the carriage along the length of the actuator's body, effectively converting the initial rotational input into precise linear motion.

Return Pulley: The belt also loops around a second, non-powered return pulley (or idler pulley) at the opposite end of the actuator. This pulley guides the belt back, ensuring it moves in a continuous and synchronized loop.

Precision and Speed: The interlocking teeth between the belt and the pulleys are critical. They prevent any slipping, which ensures efficient torque transfer and allows for highly precise and repeatable high-speed linear movement.
